Walking Sticks, Staffs and Staves

“Walk softly and carry a big stick” …Teddy Roosevelt

They say that the second tool man invented about 2 million years ago  was the stick. The first was the rock as the story goes. But then some say that man used a stick to pry out the rocks so that perhaps the stick was first.

In any case, man has been using sticks for a long time and we have decided to help transport you back to your early history and provide you with all the tools and raw materials to make some good walking sticks here at the Cliff House.  We want you to have a good walking staff to make it easier and safer for you to hike and walk over the many miles of hiking trails we have made for you right here on the property, some of which a hiking stave will become very useful.

We have already carved several walking sticks for your use, cut several more that are ready for your carving with the very sharp pocket knifes we supply. You can also take the hand saw we provide and go cut your own stick from the forest.  We have been culling out smaller trees from the property for several years now as there are too many small trees for any of them to grow energetically. We also provide several articles from the Boy Scouts and other hiking authorities about how to make a useful walking stick. As with all our activities on the property here, we encourage you to put your car keys away and just relax and enjoy some of the simple pleasures of life that you have perhaps lost or not done in many years. Carving a good walking stick and taking some beautiful hikes might just be one of them.
